Trailer Watch: Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, & Sally Field Are Football Diehards in “80 for Brady”

You’re never too old for a trip with the besties. Starring screen legends Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field, “80 for Brady” follows four best friends who embark on a wild journey to fulfill a dream: to witness their hero Tom Brady play before he retires. “He’s almost 40 – that’s like 80 in people years,” Tomlin tells her friends in the trailer. “We’re 80 in people years!” Fonda quips.

The trailer sees the quartet of women, “tired of [their] same old boring lives,” making the spontaneous journey to the 2017 Super Bowl LI. But they discover a major oversight upon arrival: they don’t have tickets.

Chaos ensues as the foursome take extreme measures to secure admission to the playoff game: one scene sees Field entering a hot wings eating contest and another has the group posing as backup dancers hoping to infiltrate the stadium. Brady, who appears in the film, becomes less of a main attraction as the women are caught in mischief along the way, even unwittingly consuming high-dosage edibles at a party. “I’m Guy Fieri?” Moreno asks as she looks in the mirror.

Inspired by true events, “80 for Brady” reunites “Booksmart” writers Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins. It also re-teams Tomlin and Fonda, who co-starred in long-running Netflix sitcom “Grace and Frankie” as well as “Moving On,” a revenge comedy that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

Tomlin received an Oscar nod in 1976 for “Nashville.” A seven-time Oscar nominee, Fonda took home honors in 1972 for “Klute” and 1979 for “Coming Home.”

Best known for her Oscar-winning role as Anita in 1961’s “West Side Story,” Moreno played Valentina in the 2021 remake of the musical.

Field won an Oscar in 1980 for “Norma Rae” and another in 1985 for “Places in the Heart.” She also received a nod in 2013 for “Lincoln.” She has a supporting role in “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” an HBO drama that’s been renewed for a second season.

“80 for Brady” hits theaters February 3.
