During a recent interview on Twinkle Khanna’s online platform Tweak India, veteran actress Supriya Pathak candidly discussed her relationship with actor Pankaj Kapur. Joined by her sister, Ratna Pathak Shah, Supriya shared how her husband played a significant role in inspiring her to pursue acting more seriously.
Recalling the beginnings of their relationship, Supriya revealed, “We were working on a film together, which was essentially made for us to meet because it never saw the light of day. We instantly clicked. Despite having our own pasts and baggage, we simply connected. By the time we finished filming, we confessed our feelings, parted ways temporarily, and later reunited in Mumbai. That particular film never got released.”
Twinkle inquired about who got married first, and whether Supriya received any marital advice from her elder sister Ratna. Supriya humorously replied, “Who would have taken that advice? Everyone tried, but I wasn’t willing to listen. By then, I had reached a point where I didn’t want to listen to anyone. I had made up my mind.”
Supriya further shared that their mother, the late actress Dina Pathak, persistently attempted to dissuade her from pursuing the relationship, even after they had two children. “Until the last few years of her life, my mother kept trying to change my mind. She would say, ‘He will leave you!’ I would reply, ‘Yes, okay, so what?’ It had been going on for so many years, and she would tell me, ‘You made a mistake, he will leave you.’ I would simply say, ‘It’s okay, I’ll manage.'”
Ratna mentioned that their mother worried about various things, and Supriya acknowledged that their mother wasn’t particularly supportive of her relationship. However, Ratna stood by her side and provided support.
Prior to marrying Supriya, Pankaj Kapur had been married to actress and dancer Neelima Azeem. They tied the knot in 1979 and settled in New Delhi, where they welcomed their only child, Shahid Kapoor, in 1981. Unfortunately, the couple divorced in 1984. Pankaj Kapur subsequently married Supriya in 1988, and they have a daughter named Sanah Kapur and a son named Ruhaan Kapur. Supriya also shared a heartwarming anecdote about meeting Shahid Kapoor when he was just six years old.
